Greencross
Overview
Greencross is Australia's largest integrated pet care company, operating the Petbarn and City Farmers retail chains alongside the Greencross Vets veterinary network. Founded in 1994 by veterinarian Glen Richards in Townsville, Queensland, the company grew from a single veterinary practice into a national operation spanning over 250 retail stores, more than 160 veterinary clinics, specialty and emergency hospitals, and the Animates chain in New Zealand.
Greencross listed on the ASX in 2007 before being taken private by US private equity firm TPG Capital in 2019 for approximately $970 million. In 2022, TPG sold a 45% stake to AustralianSuper and the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP). The company reported revenue of $2 billion for the 2025 financial year and is currently preparing for a potential return to the ASX via an IPO in 2026, with TPG targeting a valuation of around $4 billion.
Australian dog owners will know Greencross primarily through Petbarn, one of the country's largest specialty pet retailers, and through the Greencross Vets clinic network. Greencross is currently privately held.
