Mars Petcare is the pet care division of Mars, Incorporated, a family-owned American company headquartered in McLean, Virginia. Mars was founded over a century ago and today generates approximately $55 billion in annual revenue across confectionery, food, and pet care. The Petcare division is Mars' largest business segment, accounting for around 60% of total revenue with approximately $22 billion in annual sales and more than 100,000 employees operating in over 130 countries. Mars Petcare is one of the two largest pet food companies in the world alongside Nestle Purina.
Australian dog owners will encounter Mars Petcare across a wide range of brands. Pedigree is the world's number one dog food brand by volume. Royal Canin is a global leader in breed-specific and veterinary nutrition. Advance and Optimum are formulated specifically for the Australian and New Zealand markets. Following the 2023 acquisition of Champion Petfoods, Mars also now owns premium brands Orijen and Acana. Other dog-relevant brands available in Australia include Greenies (dental treats), Schmackos, My Dog, Cesar, and Exelpet. Mars also operates a global network of veterinary hospitals and diagnostic services, though these operate primarily in North America and Europe.
