Glucose Syrup, Liquid Glucose Syrup, Starch Syrup, E965 Syrup
Glucose liquid is a carbohydrate ingredient derived from plant sources, typically corn or wheat, and is presented as a clear, viscous syrup. Its primary purpose in pet food is to provide a readily available source of energy and to enhance palatability. Rather than occurring in its natural crystalline form, glucose is utilised in a liquid state to ensure ease of mixing and consistent absorption.
Glucose liquid is included as a cost-effective carbohydrate source that provides readily available energy and enhances palatability. It may also function as a humectant, helping to maintain product moisture and texture stability.

Acid-Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein, Enzymatically Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein, HVP, Plant Protein Hydrolysate
Hydrolysed vegetable protein is a plant-derived ingredient produced by breaking down vegetable proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids through hydrolysis. Its primary purpose is to enhance palatability and provide a readily digestible source of protein. Rather than being used in its original whole food form, it is utilised in a hydrolysed state to optimise digestibility and reduce allergenic potential.
Hydrolysed vegetable protein is included as a cost-effective source of amino acids and to enhance palatability through the creation of savoury flavours. It also allows manufacturers to optimise protein content while maintaining a desirable product texture and appearance.

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, E464, HPMC, Cellulose Hydroxypropyl Methyl Ether
Hypromellose is a semi-synthetic, plant-derived compound created from cellulose, a natural polymer found in plant cell walls. It is primarily used in pet food as a binder, thickener, or coating agent to improve texture and stability. Hypromellose is not used in its raw plant form; instead, it is processed and modified to achieve the desired functional properties for safe and effective use in formulations.
Hypromellose is included as a processing aid and coating agent to improve the stability and shelf life of certain nutrients or medications within pet food formulations. It also helps control the release of active ingredients in specialised diets or supplements.

Milk Sugar Monohydrate, Saccharum Lactis Monohydricum, E966 Monohydrate, β-D-Galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-D-Glucose Monohydrate
Lactose monohydrate is a carbohydrate derived from milk, making it an animal-origin ingredient. It serves primarily as an energy source and can also function as a palatability enhancer in pet foods. Lactose is not used in its raw, natural state; instead, it is utilised as lactose monohydrate, a purified and stable compound, to ensure consistency and digestibility in formulated diets.
Lactose monohydrate is included as a cost-effective carbohydrate source and to enhance palatability in pet food formulations. It may also serve as a carrier for flavours or active compounds, optimising ingredient dispersion.

Octadecanoic Acid Magnesium Salt, Magnesium Octadecanoate, E470b, Stearic Acid Magnesium Salt
Magnesium stearate is a compound derived from the mineral magnesium and stearic acid, a fatty acid typically sourced from plant or animal origins. It is primarily used as a flow agent in pet food manufacturing, ensuring even mixing and preventing clumping. Magnesium stearate is not used in its natural metallic form; instead, it is utilised as a safe, bioavailable compound to optimise processing.
Magnesium stearate is included as a flow agent to prevent ingredients from clumping and to optimise the manufacturing process by ensuring consistent mixing and tablet formation. Its use supports production efficiency and product uniformity rather than providing direct nutritional benefits.

Corn Starch, Zea Mays Starch, E1401, Cornflour
Maize starch is a carbohydrate ingredient derived from the endosperm of maize (corn) kernels, making it a plant-based component. It serves primarily as a source of easily digestible energy and acts as a functional binder in pet food formulations. Maize starch is utilised in its processed, refined form rather than as whole maize, ensuring consistency, digestibility, and suitability for pet nutrition.
