Palm Kernel Oil
Palm Kernel Oil
Elaeis Guineensis Oil, Palm Seed Oil, EPKO, Vegetable Fat (Palm Kernel)
Summary
Palm kernel oil is a plant-derived oil extracted from the seeds of the oil palm fruit (Elaeis guineensis). It is primarily included in pet food as a source of energy-rich fats and to support skin and coat health. Palm kernel oil is used in its refined form, not as a raw seed, to ensure safety, digestibility, and optimal nutrient absorption for pets.
Why it's used?
Palm kernel oil is included as a cost-effective fat source to provide energy and improve the texture of pet food. It also contributes to product stability by enhancing shelf life due to its oxidative resistance.

Sugar
Sugar
Sucrose, Saccharose, E955, Beta-D-Fructofuranosyl Alpha-D-Glucopyranoside
Summary
Sugar is a simple carbohydrate derived primarily from plant sources such as sugar cane or sugar beet. It serves as a readily available energy source, supporting metabolic processes and palatability in pet foods. Sugar is incorporated in its natural, refined form rather than as a raw plant material, ensuring consistency and digestibility for pets while enhancing the taste of the final product.
Why it's used?
Sugar is included as a cost-effective palatability enhancer to improve taste and encourage consumption. It may also serve as a minor preservative to help stabilise certain formulations.
Fine, pale beige skim milk solids powder with a smooth, slightly grainy texture, commonly used in dog food recipes
Skim Milk Solids
Skim Milk Solids
Nonfat Milk Solids, Dried Skim Milk, Milk Solids Nonfat, Solids Nonfat Milk
Summary
Skim milk solids are a dairy-derived ingredient obtained by removing most of the water and fat from cow’s milk, leaving behind concentrated proteins, lactose, and minerals. They are primarily included in pet food to boost protein content and enhance palatability. Skim milk solids are used in their processed, dehydrated form rather than as fresh milk, ensuring stability and digestibility in pet diets.
Why it's used?
Skim milk solids are included as a cost-effective source of protein and calcium, contributing to the nutritional profile of the product. They also enhance palatability and improve texture, making the food more appealing to pets.
Fine off-white yoghurt solids powder with a smooth, dry texture, commonly used as a dog food ingredient
Yoghurt Solids
Yoghurt Solids
Dried Yoghurt, Yoghurt Powder, Fermented Milk Solids, Cultured Milk Solids
Summary
Yoghurt solids are a dairy-derived ingredient produced by removing moisture from yoghurt, resulting in a concentrated powder. Sourced from animal milk, they provide a rich source of protein, calcium, and beneficial probiotics, supporting digestive and immune health in pets. Yoghurt solids are used in their natural, dehydrated form, ensuring the retention of their nutritional and functional properties for optimal pet nutrition.
Why it's used?
Yoghurt solids are included as a palatability enhancer and a source of dairy-derived protein and calcium, appealing to pet owners seeking perceived nutritional benefits. They may also serve as a label-friendly ingredient to support marketing claims of added probiotics or digestive support.
Fine, pale yellow soy lecithin powder with a slightly grainy texture, shown as a dog food supplement
Soy Lecithin
Soy Lecithin
Soya Lecithin, E322, Lecithin (Glycine Max), Phosphatidylcholine
Summary
Soy lecithin is a plant-derived ingredient extracted from soybeans. It serves primarily as an emulsifier, helping to blend fats and water in pet food formulations for improved texture and consistency. Rather than using raw soybeans, soy lecithin is utilised in its refined form to optimise digestibility and functional performance, ensuring safety and efficacy in premium pet nutrition.
Why it's used?
Soy lecithin is included as an emulsifier to improve the texture and consistency of pet food, ensuring fats and water-based ingredients blend smoothly. It may also serve as a cost-effective ingredient to enhance product stability and shelf life.
Fine, light brown carob solids powder with a smooth, slightly rippled texture, commonly used in healthy dog treats
Carob Solids
Carob Solids
Carob Powder, Locust Bean Solids, Ceratonia Siliqua Solids, Locust Bean Powder
Summary
Carob solids are derived from the pods of the carob tree, a leguminous plant native to the Mediterranean region. Used in their natural, ground form, carob solids provide a source of dietary fibre and natural sweetness. Their primary purpose in pet food is to enhance palatability and offer a low-fat, caffeine-free alternative to cocoa, supporting digestive health and flavour variety.
Why it's used?
Carob solids are included as a natural flavouring agent to enhance palatability and provide a chocolate-like taste without the toxicity of cocoa. They also serve as a label-friendly ingredient that appeals to consumers seeking natural or alternative treat options for their pets.
