Overview
Located in Sydney’s Inner West, Illoura Reserve in Balmain East includes a designated off-leash dog area.
The park is unfenced and set along the harbour, with grassy sections, natural sandstone features, and water views that create a scenic exercise space for locals.
The leash-free area sits between the playground and Peacock Point, with open grass and access to the harbour edge. Shaded spots and seating are available, though facilities are limited.
Dogs must remain outside the children’s playground and are not permitted within 10 metres of the play equipment. As the area is unfenced and close to water and drop-offs, reliable recall is essential. The ground can become muddy after rain, and owners should bring their own water.
Balmain East Wharf and local cafés are only a short walk away, making it easy to combine a dog visit with a coffee or harbour stroll. Harbour paths around the reserve also link into longer foreshore walks, offering more variety for active dogs and owners.
Illoura Reserve is best suited to confident, social dogs that enjoy exploring natural terrain and waterfront settings.
Illoura Reserve is managed by the Inner West Council.
