Overview
The Bellevue opened in 1878 as the Elphin, named after James Quigley's home township in Ireland. The Quigley family held the licence for 58 years, and the Bellevue name took over in 1934. After a Tooths sell-off in 1981 and a long run of publicans, WDS Hotels renovated the place top-to-bottom in 2014, the Malouf brothers ran it from about 2018, and the Calligeros family took over in April 2021. Upstairs is Brigitte's, a 30-seat dining room with an open kitchen, where chef James Metcalfe (ex Becasse) cooks caramelised pig's head with maple gastrique and an $80 six-course tasting. Downstairs is the pub: sports on every screen, Wednesday trivia, Saturday karaoke, a free Wii on the deck from six.
Dogs are welcome throughout the downstairs, which includes the front bar and the sports-deck side. Paddington's Five Ways crowd settles in for the long Sunday arvo with the dog under the bar stool.
