Overview
The Lord Gladstone has held the Chippendale corner since at least the 1850s. An 1889 rebuild after fire locked in the current building; Paddy Coughlan lifted the food and bar programme from about 2015, and in 2019 long-time partner Benny Johnson and second-in-command Mitchell Crum took the keys. The Johnson-Crum refit opened up exposed brick and laid in a vintage tartan carpet, and a first-floor gallery called Goodspace runs rotating week-long shows from Sydney artists, with life-drawing classes on Tuesdays. The kitchen turns out a triple-cheese cheeseburger, half a roast chook with bread sauce, a Thursday five-buck wing basket and ten-dollar burgers at the start of the week.
Dogs are welcome in the rear courtyard (covered in parts, painted on every wall with Scott Marsh murals), and well-behaved ones are allowed inside on the main floor too. Chippendale locals have treated the pub as their own since long before the galleries arrived.
