Kefir
Kefir
Milk Kefir, Kefir Grains, Tibetan Mushroom, Bulgaros
Summary
Kefir is a fermented dairy product produced by inoculating milk with a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts. In commercial dog food, it is typically added as a dried powder or as a fermented milk ingredient. Kefir provides beneficial probiotics that support digestive health and help maintain a balanced gut microbiome in dogs. When included at appropriate levels, it is generally safe; however, excessive amounts may cause digestive upset, particularly in dogs with lactose intolerance.
Why it's used?
Kefir is included in some dog food formulations primarily to introduce beneficial probiotics, which can support digestive health in dogs, while also offering manufacturers a way to differentiate their products in a competitive market. Its use is generally intended to provide a functional benefit to the animal rather than serving as a filler or cost-saving ingredient.
Bright red, oval goji berry fruits with a wrinkled texture, grouped together on a plain background
Goji Berry
Goji Berry
Lycium Barbarum, Wolfberry, Matrimony Vine, Fructus Lycii
Summary
Goji berry is a small, red fruit derived from the Lycium barbarum plant, classified as a plant-based ingredient. It is valued for its rich content of antioxidants, vitamins, and amino acids, supporting immune health and overall vitality in pets. In pet food, goji berry is included in its natural, whole form to maximise nutrient availability and functional benefits.
Why it's used?
Goji berry is included as a label-friendly ingredient to appeal to health-conscious consumers, leveraging its reputation as a superfood. Its presence allows manufacturers to market the product as containing antioxidant-rich, natural ingredients, despite its minimal functional impact on pet nutrition.

Colostrum Powder
Colostrum Powder
Bovine Colostrum, Bovine Colostrum Powder, Bos Taurus Colostrum, Bos Taurus Colostrum Powder
Summary
Colostrum powder is a nutrient-rich substance derived from the first milk produced by mammals, typically cows, after giving birth. Sourced from animal origin, it is valued for its high concentrations of immunoglobulins, growth factors, and bioactive proteins, supporting immune health and development. Colostrum is processed and dried into powder form for stability and ease of inclusion in pet foods, rather than used in its raw liquid state.
Why it's used?
Colostrum powder is included as a functional ingredient to support immune health and development, particularly in puppies and senior pets. Its presence also serves as a premium, label-friendly addition that appeals to health-conscious consumers seeking advanced nutrition for their pets.

Green Lipped Mussel
Green Lipped Mussel
Perna Canaliculus, New Zealand Green Mussel, Greenshell Mussel, Kuku
Summary
Green lipped mussel is a marine animal ingredient sourced from the coastal waters of New Zealand. It is primarily included in pet food for its rich content of omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, and chondroitin, which support joint health and reduce inflammation. Green lipped mussel is used in its natural, whole form, ensuring optimal nutrient availability and bioactivity for pets.
Why it's used?
Green lipped mussel is included as a functional ingredient to provide natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids and joint-supporting nutrients, supporting product differentiation and marketing claims related to joint health. Its presence also appeals to consumers seeking premium or holistic pet food formulations.

Pumpkin Seed
Pumpkin Seed
Cucurbita Pepo Seed, Pepita, Cucurbita Pepo, Pepita Seed
Summary

It is included in pet food primarily for its rich content of protein, healthy fats, and micronutrients such as magnesium and zinc. Pumpkin seed is used in its natural, whole form, providing both nutritional value and functional fibre to support digestive health in pets.
Why it's used?
Pumpkin seed is included as a nutrient-dense ingredient to enhance the protein, fibre, and micronutrient profile of the product, supporting marketing claims of added health benefits. It also serves as a label-friendly component that appeals to health-conscious consumers.
Fine white powder of vitamin C with a slightly grainy texture, commonly used as a dog supplement in Australia
Vitamin C
Vitamin C
Ascorbic Acid, L-Ascorbic Acid, E300, L-Threo-Hex-2-Enono-1,4-Lactone
Summary
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin of plant origin commonly included in pet food formulations. Its primary purpose is to support immune function and act as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from oxidative damage. Vitamin C is not used in its natural fruit form but is instead utilised as a synthesised compound to ensure stability and consistent dosage.
Why it's used?
Vitamin C is included as an antioxidant to help preserve the freshness and stability of the product by slowing oxidation. It may also be added for its perceived health benefits, supporting marketing claims related to immune support.
Fine white taurine powder with a soft, fluffy texture, commonly used as a supplement for dogs
Taurine
Taurine
2-Aminoethanesulphonic Acid, L-Taurine, E107, 2-Aminoethane-1-Sulphonic Acid
Summary
Taurine is a naturally occurring amino sulfonic acid derived from animal sources, particularly meat and fish. It is added to pet food to support cardiovascular health, vision, and proper immune function, especially in cats who cannot synthesise it sufficiently. Taurine is not used in its raw form; instead, it is incorporated as a purified, synthesised compound to ensure stability, safety, and optimal absorption.
Why it's used?
Taurine is included to ensure adequate levels of this essential amino acid, particularly in diets where animal protein content may be insufficient to meet canine or feline nutritional requirements. Its addition supports cardiovascular health and is often used to address consumer concerns about diet-associated heart issues.
Fine white powder texture of pyridoxine hydrochloride, a dog supplement ingredient, shown in close-up detail
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride
Vitamin B6, E300, Pyridoxine HCl, Pyridoxine Monohydrochloride
Summary
Pyridoxine hydrochloride is a synthetic, water-soluble form of vitamin B6, derived from chemical synthesis rather than natural sources. It is added to pet foods to support protein metabolism, nervous system health, and immune function. Unlike naturally occurring vitamin B6 in foods, pyridoxine is utilised in its hydrochloride salt form to ensure stability, safety, and optimal absorption in companion animals.
Why it's used?
Pyridoxine hydrochloride is included as a cost-effective, stable source of vitamin B6 to ensure nutritional adequacy and meet regulatory labelling requirements. Its addition helps manufacturers guarantee consistent vitamin content throughout the product’s shelf life.
Fine off-white MCT powder with a smooth, slightly clumpy texture, commonly used as a dog supplement ingredient
MCT Powder
MCT Powder
Medium Chain Triglyceride Powder, Medium-Chain Triglyceride Powder, MCT Oil Powder, E472c
Summary
MCT powder is a functional ingredient derived from medium-chain triglycerides, typically sourced from coconut or palm oil (plant origin). It is valued for providing a readily digestible energy source that supports metabolism and cognitive function in pets. Rather than its natural oil form, MCT is utilised as a powder, created by binding the oil to a carrier for improved handling and incorporation into pet foods.
Why it's used?
MCT powder is included as a functional fat source to provide easily digestible energy and support metabolic health in pets. It may also be used to enhance palatability and differentiate the product in the premium or specialised nutrition market.
