Overview

BuggyBix is an Australian pet food startup founded by former banker Shaun Eislers, using black soldier fly larvae and mealworms as the primary protein source in dog treats and meal toppers. The formulations were developed in partnership with Western Sydney University, backed by AgriFutures Australia funding.

Insect protein is naturally hypoallergenic, making it suitable for dogs with sensitivities to conventional proteins like beef or chicken. It also carries a significantly lower environmental footprint — black soldier fly larvae require roughly one-sixth the water and a fraction of the land compared to poultry protein per kilogram.

The range includes training treats, dental bars, and wet food, sold through independent pet retailers across Australia.
