Overview
The Rio traded as a Summer Hill milk bar for sixty-three years, run across all of them by George Poulos, who finished his final shift in 2015 and died later the same week. The current operators took the site over in the back half of the decade and rebuilt it as a cocktail and wine bar without smoothing out too much of the memory: the booze list runs Negronis, cheese boards and spritzes, but the boozy milkshake stays on the menu as a nod to the earlier life. The room seats twenty inside, with a handful of pavement tables out the front and a sister site, the Temperance Society, a block away.
Dogs are welcome on the outdoor seating. The pavement tables are the only option, so small-to-medium dogs and a quieter Summer Hill weeknight tend to work best.
