Kangaroo
Kangaroo
Macropus Spp., Kangaroo Meat, Kangaroo Muscle, Macropod Meat
Summary
Kangaroo is a novel animal protein sourced from wild Australian kangaroos. It is prized for its lean, highly digestible meat, offering a rich source of essential amino acids, iron, and B vitamins. Kangaroo is primarily included in pet food to support muscle maintenance and overall vitality. This ingredient is used in its natural, whole food form, ensuring optimal nutrient availability and palatability.
Why it's used?
Kangaroo is included as a novel, high-protein meat source that appeals to consumers seeking hypoallergenic or limited-ingredient diets for their pets. Its use also serves as a marketing differentiator, positioning the product as premium and suitable for pets with common protein sensitivities.
Fine white powder of maltodextrin with a soft, smooth texture, commonly used as a dog food ingredient
Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin
Dextrin, E1400, Hydrolysed Starch, Starch Hydrolysate
Summary
Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate ingredient derived from plant sources, typically corn, rice, or potato starch. It serves primarily as an energy source and is also used to improve texture and palatability in pet foods. Maltodextrin is not used in its natural plant form; instead, it is processed into a fine, easily digestible powder to optimise absorption and functionality.
Why it's used?
Maltodextrin is included as a cost-effective carbohydrate source that provides energy and improves the texture and consistency of pet food products. It also functions as a stabiliser, helping to extend shelf life and maintain product quality.

Stabilisers
Stabilisers
Thickeners, Gelling Agents, E-Numbers, Food Gums
Summary
Stabilisers are functional additives derived from various sources, including plant and mineral origins, used in pet food to maintain texture, consistency, and shelf life. Their primary purpose is to prevent ingredient separation and preserve product quality. Stabilisers are not used in their natural raw state; instead, they are incorporated as specific compounds, such as gums or salts, to ensure safety and effective functionality.
Why it's used?
Stabilisers are included to maintain the texture and consistency of pet food products, preventing ingredient separation during processing and storage. Their use helps optimise product shelf life and ensures a uniform appearance, supporting both functional quality and consumer expectations.

Glycerine
Glycerine
Glycerol, 1,2,3-Propanetriol, E422, Propane-1,2,3-Triol
Summary
Glycerine is a colourless, odourless liquid derived from plant or animal fats. In pet food, it serves primarily as a humectant, helping to retain moisture and improve texture. Glycerine is not used in its natural, raw state but is refined and purified for food-grade applications to ensure safety and optimal absorption. It also aids in palatability and shelf-life extension.
Why it's used?
Glycerine is included as a humectant to retain moisture and improve the texture of pet food products, helping to prevent them from drying out. It also acts as a mild sweetener to enhance palatability for pets.
Fine white salt granules in a circular pile on a plain background, showing a powdery, smooth texture
Salt
Salt
Sodium Chloride, NaCl, Table Salt, E535
Summary
Salt is a mineral ingredient derived from the combination of sodium and chloride, typically sourced from natural deposits or seawater. It is primarily included in pet food to support electrolyte balance, nerve function, and hydration. Salt is not used in its raw mineral form but is utilised as sodium chloride, a purified compound, to ensure safety, palatability, and optimal absorption in pets.
Why it's used?
Salt is included as a palatability enhancer to improve taste and encourage consumption, and also functions as a preservative to help extend product shelf life. Its use allows manufacturers to optimise flavour while maintaining product stability.
Fine white mineral salts powder with a soft, grainy texture, commonly used as a dog supplement ingredient
Mineral Salts
Mineral Salts
E511, E516, E518, E529
Summary
Mineral salts are inorganic compounds derived from naturally occurring minerals, typically sourced from the earth. They are included in pet food to provide essential minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, which support bone health, nerve function, and metabolic processes. Mineral salts are not used in their raw or metallic state; instead, they are utilised as specific compounds to ensure safety and optimal absorption.
Why it's used?
Mineral salts are included to provide essential minerals that support overall pet health and meet nutritional requirements. They also help optimise product stability and ensure compliance with regulatory labelling standards.
Fine light brown smoke flavour powder with a dry, slightly textured surface, commonly used in dog food ingredients
Smoke Flavour
Smoke Flavour
Liquid Smoke, Smoke Condensate, Smoke Extract, E150a
Summary
Smoke flavour is a functional ingredient derived from the condensation of wood smoke, typically from hardwoods, and is of plant origin. It is primarily added to pet food to enhance palatability and aroma, encouraging acceptance. Rather than using raw smoke, which contains harmful compounds, smoke flavour is utilised in a purified, food-grade liquid or powder form to ensure safety and consistency.
Why it's used?
Smoke flavour is included to enhance palatability by imparting a desirable aroma and taste that appeals to pets. It also serves as a label-friendly ingredient, allowing manufacturers to market the product as having a more appealing or gourmet profile.
