Flea and Tick Spot-On for Medium Dogs

Overview
PURINA Totalcare® Flea & Tick Protection for Medium Dogs is a topical spot-on treatment formulated to protect medium-breed dogs from fleas and ticks. It uses fipronil and (S)-methoprene to kill adult fleas and prevent development of flea eggs, larvae and pupae — helping break the flea lifecycle.
The treatment also offers tick control against common ticks including brown dog ticks and provides some protection against paralysis ticks. This product is part of the TOTALCARE parasite-control range, intended for regular external parasite protection for medium-sized dogs when used according to label instructions.
Ingredients
Active: Fipronil, (S)-Methoprene. Inactive: Not publicly documented.

Fipronil is a phenylpyrazole insecticide commonly used in topical flea and tick treatments. It disrupts the central nervous system of parasites by blocking GABA-regulated chloride channels, resulting in paralysis and death.

Methoprene is an insect growth regulator used in flea control products, often combined with adulticides. It mimics juvenile hormones in insects, preventing flea larvae and pupae from maturing into breeding adults.

Unknown ingredients refer to components listed in pet food formulations whose specific identity or source is not disclosed. These may originate from animal, plant, or synthetic sources. Their primary purpose can vary, including nutritional supplementation or functional roles such as preservation. As their exact form is unspecified, it is unclear whether they are used in their natural state or as processed compounds, raising concerns about transparency and traceability.
This ingredient is included as a cost-effective component or processing aid, potentially serving to optimise manufacturing efficiency or product texture. Its presence may also support labelling requirements or contribute to the product’s stability, though its specific functional role is not clearly defined.
