Overview
Sutherland Shire Council Animal Shelter, located in Taren Point, provides care and rehoming services for dogs and cats that have been abandoned, found stray, surrendered, or seized.
This location is the official pound for Sutherland Shire Council and the City of Sydney Council, managing the care of lost and stray animals on their behalf.
Adoption
Available dogs are temperament tested, desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, and lifetime-registered. To adopt, you’ll need to book an appointment in advance—walk-ins are not accepted—and adoption fees are card-only, with staff guiding you through paperwork, registration, and next steps.
Lost Dog
If you find a lost dog, contact the council directly using the phone number provided below.
- Sutherland Shire Council: (02) 9710 0333
- City of Sydney Council: (02) 9265 9333
Alternatively, you can take the dog to your nearest veterinary clinic, where staff can scan for a microchip and assist in locating the owner.
Donate
Donations of dog food, treats, coats, towels, and other essentials in good condition are welcomed. Monetary donations are also accepted but must be arranged directly with staff, as the shelter operates cash-free.
Volunteer
The shelter relies on approved volunteers to assist with dog socialisation and attend local events to promote animals available for adoption. Applicants must commit to a regular weekly shift and be comfortable handling animals in the shelter environment.
