The Chippo Hotel

The Chippo Hotel was built in the 1880s as the Chippendale Hotel. For more than a century it ran as a working-man's local before Brett Strauss reopened it as The Chippo in October 2016. Bhavani Baumann (known to everyone as Mama B) took over in May 2024 and converted the kitchen to a fully plant-based menu. The Chippo is now the first one-hundred-per-cent vegan pub in Australia. The basement runs a live-music programme across the week, the main bar keeps comedy and trivia nights on the clock, and the beer garden out the back circles a fire pit once the weather turns.

Dogs are welcome in the front bar, the covered outdoor area and the beer garden, with water bowls set up in all three. Chippendale regulars treat it as the local — now the vegan local, with the dog on the bench.
