The Rose Hotel

Dog Friendly Pub in Chippendale

Overview

The Rose has held its Chippendale corner since 1877, when it opened as the Native Rose — shorthand for the boronia that once grew on the land. The 'Native' was dropped in the mid-nineties; the Kanellos family ran the pub from 2006 for two decades before Colm and Peta O'Neill took over in early 2026. Twenty-eight taps stock independent Australian breweries, the Mexican Pizza earned its own revival after customers petitioned it back, and the upstairs Marmalade Bar seats 120 under pressed-metal ceilings, between vintage Chesterfield lounges, looking down on the beer garden. Tuesday trivia runs with Jeeves, Wednesday is live music, pool and darts fill in the gaps.

Dogs are welcome in the front bar, the covered outdoor area, the public courtyard and the beer garden. A ten-minute walk from Central Station covers most of the Chippendale student trade.
