Palm Beach: Is It Dog Friendly?

Palm Beach: Is It Dog Friendly?

Palm Beach needs no introduction — the long, double-sided spit at the top of Sydney's northern beaches is one of the most recognisable stretches of coastline in the country. It also generates more dog access questions than almost any other beach on this list, particularly following news of a potential off-leash trial.

IN SHORT:

Dogs are currently banned from Palm Beach at all times — both the ocean side and the Pittwater side of the spit. A proposal to introduce a time-restricted off-leash trial at the northern end of the beach is under consideration by Northern Beaches Council, but as of early 2026 it has not been approved. Until confirmed, the full ban applies.

The nearest dog-friendly alternatives are Rowland Reserve at Bayview (11km south) and Great Mackerel Beach (accessible by ferry from Palm Beach Wharf).

Current Dog Rules at Palm Beach — and What's Proposed

Palm Beach is managed by Northern Beaches Council, which currently prohibits dogs from the full length of the beach — ocean side and Pittwater side — year-round. There are no time-based exceptions and no on-leash concessions on the sand.

A proposal to allow off-leash dogs at the northern tip of Palm Beach during restricted hours has been discussed by Northern Beaches Council, following the success of the Mona Vale Beach South trial that commenced in October 2025. However, as of early 2026, no formal approval has been granted and no trial has started. Northern Beaches Council has indicated it will consider the proposal further in 2026.

It's important not to confuse the proposal with approval — the current rules remain a full ban.

Dog-Friendly Options at the Top of the Northern Beaches

Palm Beach's geographic position — at the very tip of the northern beaches peninsula — means the dog alternatives require a drive back south or a ferry trip across to Pittwater. Rowland Reserve at Bayview is the main option (11km south), off-leash all day with Pittwater swimming and good facilities.

The more interesting option from Palm Beach is the ferry to Great Mackerel Beach, which operates from Palm Beach Wharf. The ferry runs on weekends and dogs are welcome on board. Great Mackerel Beach is a remote, national park-adjacent beach on the Pittwater side — off-leash access available at certain times and a genuinely special day out for dogs and owners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dogs allowed at Palm Beach?

No — not currently. Dogs are banned from Palm Beach at all times under Northern Beaches Council's by-laws. This applies to both the ocean beach and the Pittwater side. A proposal for a time-restricted off-leash trial at the northern end is under council consideration but has not been approved as of early 2026.

Is there a dog-friendly area coming to Palm Beach?

Possibly. Northern Beaches Council has indicated it will consider a proposal for an off-leash trial at Palm Beach North during 2026, following the Mona Vale Beach South trial. No formal decision has been made. Until an official trial is confirmed and signage is in place, the full ban applies and dogs are not permitted on any part of Palm Beach.

What is the closest dog-friendly beach to Palm Beach?

Rowland Reserve at Bayview is the closest all-day option at approximately 11km south — off-leash all day on Pittwater with good facilities. For something closer, the Palm Beach ferry to Great Mackerel Beach is an excellent weekend option — dogs are welcome on board.

Will I be fined for bringing my dog to Palm Beach?

Yes. Dogs on Palm Beach breach Northern Beaches Council's local orders and fines apply under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998. The beach is well-known and regularly patrolled, particularly during summer and public holidays. Don't rely on the proposed trial as justification — it has not been approved.

Can my dog swim at a beach near Palm Beach?

Yes. Rowland Reserve at Bayview (11km south) offers off-leash Pittwater swimming all day. The Palm Beach ferry to Great Mackerel Beach on weekends is the most scenic option — dogs are permitted and the beach has off-leash access available.

What should I bring when taking my dog to the beach in Sydney?

Bring fresh water and a collapsible bowl — dogs shouldn't drink saltwater or harbour water in large quantities. A long-line lead is worth having at beaches with time restrictions so your dog can still move freely when required. Pack poo bags, a dry towel, and reef-safe sunscreen for light-coated dogs on hot days. Most Sydney dog beaches have limited shade, so early morning or late afternoon visits are better in summer.
